The Studio
Chaos is everywhere-and artists, to fashion art and live truthfully,
have no choice but to invite this unwanted guest right into the studio.      [Eric Maisel]

Charcoal

Elemental and easy to work with. Used for drawing layouts for paintings.  From a fire it is inconsistent, oddly shaped, crumbly
and difficult to use.  This is perfect when using materials when you want to work against your ability to draw.

Charcoal

Charcoal is generally used for studies or prep work.  I produce finished work in this medium.  The tonal range is almost as rich as
drypoint etching.  The pieces become etherial and seem more like still life…contemplative.

Dry Point Etching

Drypoint etching is one of the main intaglio processes.  metal stylus is used to draw directly upon a metal plate.  Drypoint etching is prized for its "burr", which is the metal shaving turned up at the side of the furrow. This catches the ink and prints with a richness that adds to the directness of the artist's work.  The burr is unfortunately crushed easily and limits the number of impressions that can be taken.

The Golden Faun
The idea for this paper was Memento mori or [remember that you will die]
We used a skull that I had gilded as the central motif surrounded by bones and embellished with flies and then degraded and eliminated parts of the image as if it were rotting.

The Parrot Fly
This was our first collaboration using my Fly motif as a symbol of death and decay.
I wanted a sense of irony when I created this pretty but discomforting motif.   Anita Modra of Rollout enhanced this design concept even further by configuring the motif in a stunning grouping and adding pink.
